A Meteor

Photo and Quote: Jack London
Post Office
Glen Ellen, California

This morning, I borrowed a family car, and drove to the town of Glen Ellen. I had a small stack of cards to mail. I drove along Hwy 12, a corridor of harvested vineyards, shuttered wine country resorts and restaurants, all closed during the recent COVID shelter in orders, boarded up farm stands waiting for late spring, and large patches of ash charred trees and land from the most recent fires.

In Glen Ellen, I parked the car, put on my mask and carried my small envelopes into the post office, waiting in the short line, I looked up to find a framed photo of Jack London and the quote:

“I would rather be a superb meteor, every atom of me in magnificent glow, than a sleepy and permanent planet. The proper function of a man is to live, not to exist."
Jack London

Since, my family moved to this area in 1980, we have visited Jack and Charmian London's home several times. When I was a teenager we rode horses through The Beauty Ranch and just recently before we left for our travels, Scott packed a picnic lunch for us to eat under the oak trees after our hike through the property. I remember for dessert, he stuffed peanut butter in celery sticks with tiny raisins on top.  Scott loved telling me stories of Jack London going on his adventures, funding his travels by selling the books and stories he wrote.

This morning, I didn't go up to the ranch. I will visit there soon and hike to the Wolf House, one of my favorite walks at the property.

I love that quote. Sweet memories. Celery with peanut butter and raisins is the best!
